NORWICH – Apparently a lot of people in Norwich are looking for bargains.

Discount store Steals & Deals had 1,200 customers on its opening day on Saturday, said Tammy Haller, who owns the store with her husband, Jason Haller. There were so many that the store stayed open an hour after closing time to accommodate them.

Business on Sunday was almost as brisk, with 1,000 customers, Haller said.

“We did very well,” she said. “We’re excited.”

The 7,700-square foot store is next to Staples at Norwich Landing at 45 Salem Turnpike (Route 82). The plaza also is home to KFC, River Vallery Surgery Center, Sprint, Great Scot! and a Red Cross blood donation center.

The Hallers started selling online four or five years ago, and a few months ago decided to open the store. “My house is grateful we don’t still have it there,” Haller said.

The store sells close outs, surplus and open-box items. All the merchandise is new.

Jason Haller’s daughter Angela Haller was staffing the store’s register.

She said the store has “good new stuff at reasonable prices. People definitely need it these days.”
